On teaching, legalism, and young role models

Most of my blog posts are birthed out from my devotionals, and sometimes I write them down as is. I’m not really good in fancy terms and words, and even not good in creating titles (haha). But I’m trying.

This one I wrote out of a growing burden about teaching and legalism inside the church.

Teaching according to Christ

(Read: Colossians 2:6-10)

6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. 8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

Whenever we teach the word of God, we must arm ourselves with His heavenly wisdom and understanding. Hindi maganda na napakababaw lang ng pagkakaintindi natin sa Salita Nya. Kaya mas mainam na nagreresearch tayo about certain verses, especially kung may historical and/or cultural background ang sinasabi. We have to go DEEP, and DEEPER. It is like a well, or digging up a well. Maghuhukay talaga tayo nang malaliman para makakuha ng tubig. Likewise, we should also dig deeper still.

The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; The wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook. ~Proverbs 18:4

Na-realize ko rin na not all pastors are teachers, and not all teachers are pastors. If you’re a pastor who can teach, good for you and the congregation, but teaching still requires a lot. You have to teach WELL. A pastor handles people’s individual and corporate attitudes; to be a teacher, one must also handle the word of God carefully.

(Read: Colossians 2:13-15, 20-23)

20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations— 21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” 22 which all concern things which perish with the using—according to the commandments and doctrines of men?

Our faith is not based on men’s doctrines and regulations imposed in the church. Tama na magkaroon ng orderliness sa loob ng church, but never base your salvation or faith in human standards. Maraming pinagbabawal ang ibang church leaders dahil sa maraming rason, it might be 1) due to past wrongs/faults/sins that happened; 2) due to fear; 3) due to insecurity.

But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself rather to godliness. (1 Timothy 4:7)

Be An Example

Every Saturday I gather our music ministry’s young trainees, and last time I taught them 1 Timothy 4:12

Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. (NLT)

Charge to the Youth

I charge the youth, the young believers, to have a revolutionary spiritual mind, not against persons, but against the norms and aged doctrines of human standards. Set a standard according to God’s truth, in holiness, purity, love, and faith.

Prayer: Father God, I pray that You use me as an instrument of change, to break the bondage caused by human standards inside the church. We are free because You have set us free from all sins and ways of the world, and it is not Your will for us to be burdened by things imposed by people out of their personal gratification. Father, use me as Your instrument to turn things around. Let the crooked be straightened. Amen.

So, what's on your mind?
